World Reef Awareness Day, celebrated on June 1, is a special occasion that brings together individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our precious coral reefs. It is also a great way to kick off National Ocean Month which occurs throughout June.

On this day, we would like to shine a spotlight on an exceptional organization that has been making a significant impact in reef conservation – SECORE (SExual COral REproduction) International, Inc. Join us as we dive into SECORE’s mission, accomplishments, and the vital role they play in safeguarding the future of our reefs.

Preserving Coral Reefs through Innovative Techniques

SECORE International Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and preserving coral reefs through pioneering techniques in sexual coral reproduction. Established as a nonprofit organization in 2015, SECORE has been at the forefront of innovative approaches to coral conservation, aiming to restore coral reefs worldwide and to give coral reefs a future.

The Importance of Sexual Coral Reproduction

Coral reefs, often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea,” are incredibly diverse ecosystems that support a wealth of marine life. However, factors like climate change, pollution and overfishing have severely impacted coral reef health. Recognizing the critical role of sexual reproduction in coral resilience, SECORE focuses on restoring coral populations by assisting in the natural reproduction process.

The SECORE Method

By collecting coral gametes during natural spawning events, SECORE’s team is able to fertilize the eggs and grow coral larvae in carefully controlled environments. These juvenile corals are then reintroduced into degraded reef areas, helping to repopulate and revive struggling coral communities.

Educating and Inspiring Future Stewards

In addition to their conservation efforts, SECORE emphasizes the importance of education and outreach. They conduct webinars, workshops, and seminars to raise awareness about the critical state of coral reefs and the significance of sexual reproduction in their restoration. By engaging with students, researchers, and the public, SECORE inspires a new generation of ocean stewards who are passionate about reef conservation. Join Dr. Dirk Petersen, Founder and Executive Director of SECORE, for a webinar about SECORE’s work in Curacao, on June 22, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. CST (12:30 p.m. EST). Register here.
