Not every fish can win the hearts of divers, but Lola has done just that. This famous Goliath grouper is admired for her impressive size and her playful, “puppy-like” personality.
Many divers estimate that Lola weighs around 400 pounds, making her a true giant of the reef—yet she moves with a gentle curiosity that makes her approachable and unforgettable.
Some divers even joke that she has “favorites,” leaning in to certain members of the dive group and leaving others slightly envious. It’s these playful quirks that make Lola such a beloved underwater legend.
A few of our Diventures divers were lucky enough to dive with her during a past trip to Cuba, experiencing firsthand just how memorable an encounter with Lola can be.
If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Lola in her natural habitat, she is said to inhabit the reef systems of Jardines de la Reina (Gardens of the Queen), a protected marine area in Cuba that supports thriving populations of fish, lobsters, and other marine life.
Diver Stories
“Lola was my favorite part of our Cuban adventure. She clearly has learned a thing or two in her 30+ years in Garden of the Queen. She reminded me of a loyal dog coming along on a walk at the park. She was content staying by our side but occasionally, Lola would dart off to inspect something she found appealing.
The real surprise was that she would guide us over to whatever creature (read lobster) she found. Each Lola encounter was a special treat for us and I sincerely hope to dive with her again.“

About Goliath Groupers:
Goliath groupers are truly some of the giants of the reef. Belonging to a family with over 160 known species of grouper worldwide, the Goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) holds the title for the largest. These massive fish can reach up to 8 feet long and weigh as much as 800 pounds, making encounters with them unforgettable for divers.
They are long-lived, with lifespans reaching around 40 years, and they grow slowly over time. Goliath groupers are opportunistic predators, feeding on fish, crustaceans, and occasionally octopus. While they don’t migrate long distances, they do move around reefs, wrecks and mangroves, often returning to favorite hiding spots.
Beyond their sheer size and striking presence, Goliath groupers play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our oceans. As apex predators, they help regulate populations of smaller fish and maintain balanced reef ecosystems. By keeping prey species in check, they indirectly support coral reef health and biodiversity, making them an important part of the marine environment.
