From April 27 to May 5, 2025, a group of travelers from Diventures in Kansas City set out for a once-in-a-lifetime experience diving the stunning waters of the Maldives. Their home for the week was the Emperor Explorer, known for its luxurious accommodations, attentive crew, and access to some of the world’s most vibrant marine life. The liveaboard delivered on every level, despite a few entertaining travel quirks along the way.
The Travel Experience
Before boarding the boat, travelers navigated the bustling—and often chaotic—Malé airport. They quickly discovered the value of SIM cards for staying connected and learned that, in some hotels, the shower is the bathroom. But once aboard the yacht, all was forgotten. The Emperor Explorer was stunning, with spacious and comfortable staterooms, excellent food featuring flavorful Indian-inspired cuisine, and a dhoni support vessel that made dive logistics a breeze.

The Diving
Underwater our travelers experienced thrilling drift dives, night dives with mantas, and rare sightings such as billfish. The strong currents typical of Maldivian diving were expertly managed by the Emperor crew. Special praise went to lead dive pro Katy for her flexibility and focus on guest safety. Reef hooks and delayed surface marker buoys (DSMBs) became essential tools throughout the trip. By the end of the week, guests had noticeably leveled up their skills and confidence.

Culture and Connections
On land, a stop at the island of Adh Dhangethi for a beach BBQ was a trip highlight. It offered a scenic break, delicious food, and a little midweek souvenir shopping.Â
We ended the week passing out awards to our divers, for everything from mastering buoy deployment to spotting a billfish during one of the dives—a very rare find.
Overall this trip was packed with laughs and underwater milestones. We can confirm the travel time to the Maldives is 100% worth it. Our traveling crew is pictured here, looking great in their exclusive Diventures Maldives 2025 rashguards.Â

All Diventures trips are guided by a Diventures Trip Leader, who brings scuba diving and travel experience to the destination and is available to assist travelers on the ground… or on the boat. We were lucky to have expert diver and Trip Leader Mike Dugan lead this group in Maldives.Â
If you enjoy drift dives, manta rays, warm water, and exotic locations, the Maldives should be on your bucket list. December to May provides the best visibility and calmer seas. Check out our upcoming Maldives trips!
