Dax Lawless from North Liberty, Iowa is a five-year Navy veteran whose family has a history in the Navy. “It’s always been a bucket list thing,” Dax says about scuba diving. “I’ve spent a lot of time at sea. I was curious about diving but never got around to getting certified. Finally, I have reached a point in my life where I am ready.”

This past summer, Dax attended Diventures’ Scuba Open House and won a raffle where he received a 3mm wetsuit. Afterward, he was all in. Dax received his pool and classroom Open Water Diver certification and chose a Cozumel Certification Vacation to complete his Open Water Certification Dives.

“The Dive Pros on the trip were really supportive and looked out for me,” he says. “No one pushed me to do anything I didn’t want to do. We followed our Dive Master through some swim-throughs that followed the reef. He was cool with me not doing some when they weren’t in my comfort zone.”

As far as Cozumel highlights, Dax notes, “The night dives were better than the day dives. We saw a baby shark, octopus, a small squid and a bunch of huge puffer fish.”

Dax dove Cozumel with his Hydros Pro, Scubapro MK19 and Oceanic Proplus 4. Belize is his next trip. “I’m looking forward to diving the Blue Hole and trying out some photography,” he says.

If Dax had advice for himself as a child, it’s this: “You should’ve done this a long time ago!”

Dax, we can’t wait to see where your scuba journey takes you!
