Guanaja

Upcoming Trips

Guanaja

Guanaja is a diver’s dream destination. Because of its isolation, the diving is filled with colorful coral, beautiful reefs, and a variety of marine life and dive sites.

Guanaja is the most remote of the Bay Islands, about 43 miles north of mainland Honduras and eight miles from Roatán and part of the volcanic and coral mountain range called The Bonacca Ridge. The area is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and offers some of the most virgin reefs the Caribbean has to experience.

Guanaja is known as the “Green Island” of Honduras for its lush green forests. The island was “discovered” by Christopher Columbus on his fourth and final voyage to the West Indies and called it Isla de Los Pinos (Island of the Pines).

What To Expect

Scuba Diving

There are over 50 dive sites around Guanaja and about six more that the dive staff keeps secret for their special guests like us. You’ll get the opportunity to dive walls, swim throughs and wrecks, including the Jado Trader, one of the most popular wrecks in the Caribbean. Visibility is usually around 100 feet, and there are also more than 300 identified fish species in the area!

Keep your eyes out for:

  • Drumfish
  • Angelfish
  • Eagle rays
  • Caribbean reef squid
  • Nurse sharks
  • Decorator crabs
  • Octopus

The reef is also home to rare black coral and sponges of all colors. The reef around Guanaja is a protected marine reserve and the local dive centers in the area are REEF Conservation Partners. The partnership allows the centers to sponsor conservation outreach and education programs.

Clark’s Cay Dive Center

Their friendly and professional staff pride themselves on not just being your guides but your dive concierges, so please plan on leaving the lifting, hauling and packing of all the dive gear to them! Their team will carefully carry your gear onto the boats, prepare it for the dive, change it over for the second dive and rinse and store it at the end of the day. Your only assignment while onboard is to do a check to make sure you have all your gear before we depart, then sit back and enjoy the ride.

Dunbar Rock Dive Center

The boats have wide platforms for giant stride entries and sturdy ladders for exiting the water. They are provisioned with drinking water, fruit for snacking, freshwater showers, towels, camera rinse tanks, dry storage, shaded areas and all required safety equipment.

Clark’s Cay is a private island getaway that you will never forget. Your own island to relax and dive. The cabañas offer an open-air restaurant and bar, waterpark and spa. Each cabaña has a unique design and jungle feel with amazing views of the Caribbean.

The Villa on Dunbar Rock is a truly unique experience. This 15,000 square foot property is perched on an outcropping with 360° views of Sandy Bay, Guanaja, and surrounding cays; this unique resort blends beauty and serenity.

Culture

The natives of Guanaja are descendants of the original immigrants of the Bahamas and Cayman Islands. Today, the majority of islanders are Honduran. Common languages spoken are Spanish, English and a type of Creole English.

Kayaking is a great way to explore the nearby cays, paddle to the main island or simply tour around the waters. Those interested in a more in-depth kayak experience should consider making a reservation for an all-day sea kayaking tour with our “neighbor” Roland.

During the week when returning from diving or killing time on a surface interval, you may want to take a short hike up to one of the small but picturesque waterfalls and explore the gardens surrounding Bo’s place.

Bonnaca

Guanaja Town, also known as Bonnaca, is a must-see when exploring the islands. The buildings are packed together along a series of canals. It’s an interesting sight and the locals are very friendly.
