The blackwater dive was very interesting. It was a long night but worth it. The dive briefing was very thorough, covering all creatures you could possibly encounter down there. I was very excited to see all the different jellies that had colors light up around them and hunt to find some of the smallest creatures. Seeing juvenile bioluminescent mantis shrimp, lionfish, and squid was awesome!
What Can You See During a Blackwater Dive?
One of the primary draws of blackwater diving is the chance to witness creatures that are rarely seen during daytime dives. Some of the incredible marine life you might encounter includes:
- Bioluminescent Organisms: Blackwater dives often reveal bioluminescent plankton and jellyfish, which emit mesmerizing light displays as they drift through the water. With these amazing light shows and pitch-black water, it almost feels like you’re floating through space!
- Intriguing Larval Species: You may come across the early life stages of various marine animals, such as juvenile fish, squid, and lobster, all of which are often more translucent and alien-looking than their adult counterparts.

It is especially important to set a max depth during the dive briefing and to adhere to this depth. Some blackwater diving operators make this easy to adhere to by either tethering you to a line or by dropping a line of lights down, each light marking a different depth. It is important to not go past the max depth to avoid becoming disoriented and/or avoid going into deco.
Honestly, I thought it was otherworldly. You jump in almost panicked but exhilarated at the same time. You are in over 8,000 feet of water, and if you think too much, you can psyche yourself out. But once you get into the search for the alien-like critters, you ease into the dive, and it becomes rather comforting to dive in the dark. 10/10 would recommend, and I will definitely be doing this again.
