In January 2026, a group of travelers from Diventures in Lincoln joined Trip Leader Dan Stalder for an immersive dive experience in Socorro, one of the most remote and wildlife rich dive destinations in the world. The adventure began in Cabo San Lucas, where the group boarded the Nautilus Explorer liveaboard.
What makes Socorro unique is its distance from the mainland. Depending on which island you go to, you’re on the ship for 18 to 20 hours to get to the dive sites.
Life on the Liveaboard
Once the Nautilus Explorer left Cabo, everything shifted into the relaxing rhythm that makes liveaboards so appealing: diving, eating, resting, and repeating. “On liveaboards, you’re really immersed in diving,” Stalder said. “There are no outside distractions to pull travelers away from early bedtimes and early dives. It’s just truly a dive trip,” Stalder said.
Diving Socorro’s Big Animal Hotspots
When the group finally reached the islands, the reward was immediate. Socorro is all about big animal encounters, and this trip delivered!
Giant Mantas
The group saw giant oceanic manta rays on almost every dive. These huge animals circled overhead and approached divers closely. “The mantas will fly right over the top of you,” Stalder said. “They think the bubbles from a diver’s exhaust feel good on their belly, so they come very close.”
Sharks
Shark encounters were constant. The group saw hammerheads on six or seven dives, sometimes at an impressively close range. Whale sharks also made a couple of appearances, and Stalder experienced one of the highlights of the week when he swam within about 20 feet of a tiger shark.
A Rare and Unfiltered Experience
Because Socorro is far from shore, wildlife thrives. “Part of the liveaboard experience is that you get to some of the best dive sites,” Stalder said. “The remote sites are so healthy and fewer people get to see that stuff.”
For the January group, the combination of close manta interactions, shark filled dives, and a relaxed onboard atmosphere made the trip truly exceptional.
One traveler shared, “As seasoned dive adventure travelers, we have had many magical underwater moments, but nothing can compare to what we encountered underwater in Socorro! Manta rays, whale sharks, seven different shark species, and even encountering an underwater humpback whale! The was a great trip with a great trip leader and group.”
Our Trip Leader couldn’t agree more. “It was a phenomenal trip,” Stalder said. “I’ve logged more than 3,000 dives and Socorro ranks at the top of my list.”
